In order to monitor the evolution of patent protection requests in Portugal, Inventa International, a consultant specialized in intellectual property, launched the Barometer Patentes Made in Portugal 2020 that presents statistics and indicators since the 2000s. The barometer reveals the origin of patent requests, the increasing internationalization and the most innovative technological sectors in Portugal.
Inventa International consulted databases made by WIPO (World Organization of Industrial Property), EPO (European Patent Office), consulting data from 2000 to 2018, as well as statistics from the OCDE (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) and the annual reports of the INPI (National Institute of Industrial Property).
The Inventa Barometer Patentes Made in Portugal reveals the growth of patent requests over the years and the growing trend of granted or valid patents in several countries of the world. The inventions developed by national applicants are increasingly internationalizing, being submitted mostly to the European Patent Office (EPO) and the North American Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Still, it stands out the remarkable advances in the increase in patent requests, particularly since 2017, presented to the Chinese Patent Office.
The barometer also highlights the increase in patent requests in technological sectors, including the so-called “green technologies”, as well as an increase in requests in the pharmaceutical industry, civil engineering or fine organic chemistry, demonstrating a growing focus on national research and innovation.
